When a pump runs, it lowers the water level inside the casing. The vertical distance between the static water level and the pumping water level is the drawdown. Excessive drawdown can mean the pump is too large for the well, the screens are plugged, or the aquifer cannot keep up. Step-drawdown tests are the standard diagnostic for evaluating well performance and rehabilitation needs.
