Three-phase power runs motors more efficiently than single-phase and is required for most pumps over about 7.5 horsepower. Almost all Utah agricultural and commercial wells run three-phase. Many rural homes only have single-phase service, which constrains pump size; a phase converter or utility upgrade may be needed before installing a larger pump.
