In wells completed in unconsolidated formations, the annulus around the screen is filled with carefully sized gravel that holds back fine sand while letting water flow freely. A properly designed gravel pack extends well life, prevents sand pumping, and improves specific capacity. Gravel size is matched to the formation grain size and the slot size of the screen.
